THE REVIEW

Included with issue 0 (12/1997) of the magazine Audiophile Sound, this is a sample from Telarc, a record label known for producing recordings of high technical quality. It is, therefore, automatic to think that this is a product dedicated exclusively to the niche of audiophile listeners.

In reality, the CD represents a happy combination of excellent reproduction and great music.

As a test disc, it is organized into 5 sections (solo instruments, small ensembles, voice, orchestra, and special effects), each characterized by a collection of tracks that allow the listener to focus and enhance one aspect or another of the reproduction.
Classical pieces are interspersed with Jazz sessions, either studio or live, and other excerpts from the American label's catalog, concluding with a squadron of F-16s flying over your head and 50'' of drums that will catapult you into a recording studio.

Among the most interesting pieces is the "Toccata" from Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor BWV 565", performed by Michael Murray. A pneumatic organ of devastating power and realism will literally fill your ears. Later you will discover "The Foxhunter Jig" performed by the Empire Brass Quintet, a short bagpipe piece characterized by the entry of a deeply resonant bass note that supports the wind instruments and gives the whole a celestial solidity. The next piece is the best on the entire CD. A delightful "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)" performed by trumpeter Jeremy Davenport accompanied by a piano, double bass, and drum ensemble.

What elegance, what refinement, and what a recording! If your system allows, you will be catapulted into a Jazz Club, sitting and enjoying the show with the ensemble playing just a few meters from you!
