When things are done right, it shows.
And a soundtrack like "Rockstar" is something done right. Definitely.
The idea is to revive a bit of '80s hard rock in a CD, and thus create a soundtrack suitable for the film. Said and done.
There are big names like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and KISS, but the real gem is the tracks by Steel Dragon, a fictional band formed for the occasion; it includes artists of the caliber of Zakk Wylde, Jeff Scott Soto, Jason Bonham, a legacy artist, and Michael Matijevic.
You have the chance to dust off some hard rock with "Lick It Up" and "Wild Side", and also to rediscover the true Bon Jovi, that of "Livin’ On A Prayer", which was a hit at the time. Among the Dragon songs, "We All Die Young" stands out, taken from Steelheart, the band of the talented Matijevic (vocals). At the start, just a whisper; at 10'' the bass and drums kick in, the guitar is silent for the moment, the voice is soft; but a minute later, the voice screeches, and the guitar screams. 2'.25'', the guitar erupts into a solo that becomes increasingly overwhelming.
"Yeah... we all die young..."
In closing, everything calms down.
Another highlight, "Blood Pollution": for the first 40'' bass and drums practically move forward on their own, except for a few timid incursions from the guitar, which redeems itself shortly after; a rather "driven" track, dry and distorted guitar, fast and pressing solo.
Let's not forget about "Stand up", where Soto showcases fearsome high notes - his is an almost heartbreaking scream - while Bonham bangs on the drums and Wylde indulges in yet another solo: a quick, continuous, and lively trail of notes.
A different story for "Long Live Rock'n'Roll": it really seems that neither Soto nor Matijevic can keep up with Ronnie James Dio, and furthermore, Blackmore certainly does not go unnoticed. Better the original.
The songwriters are Twiggy Ramirez - at the time Marilyn Manson's bassist - ("Blood Pollution") and Sammy Hagar ("Stand up").
If you're in the mood to listen to some hard rock, this album is for you.
Listen to believe.
