In 2008, the Chinese organized the XXIX Modern Olympiad (which in reality were only 27, but humans like to count the ones not held too), the Americans elected the first black president in their history (a total of XLIVth in the series: which, in reality, were only 43 because humans also like to count duplicates, but that's another story), Silvio Berlusconi started his IV term as President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic (also here, in reality, he's still on his first, but humans like to think that, during these years, he wasn't for some time).
What I'm about to say has nothing to do with the previously made historical contextualization.
Yesterday, in the basement of a Milanese condominium, the forces of the "Order" (the quotes are not at all polemical) found a "Hotel" specialized in clientele, preferably illegal, Chinese: the owners offered about sixty clients mini apartments of 5-10 sqm with shared sanitary facilities (even though it would be correct to speak in the singular since there was only one) at prices ranging from 100 to 200 Euros monthly. Rates that I found more than honest, if compared with the Italian average: the same way seems to have thought the major Italian (tele)journalistic outlets since the biggest highlight they gave was to the fact that the "Hotel" didn't have emergency exits up to code. After all, it's known, one sets up a hotel for illegal immigrants in the center of Milan, and it's obvious that the first thing to worry about should be bringing their business up to code...
Also yesterday, the Republic of South Africa refused the entry visa for the Dalai Lama who wanted to attend the Nobel Peace Prize conference scheduled in 2010 as the "side dish" to the World Cup: China expressed its appreciation. Near South Africa, the former "granary of the continent", Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), is dying of hunger: this state was one of the largest grain producers in the world and one of the few sub-Saharan African countries with food self-sufficiency but the anti-colonial policy of President Mugabe expropriated all the large farms from previous (white) owners, handing them over to friends, relatives, etc., etc., resulting in their failure in just a few years, due to agricultural inexperience, causing in a chain first hunger and then epidemics (the latest cholera one seems to be slightly improving). Mugabe, who in the 80s was considered by various "do-it-yourself" human rights supporters to be one of humanity's heroes (for his anti-colonial policy, indeed) as opposed to the "devil," which was the racist regime of South Africa, now exports capital illegally to Hong Kong (a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China since 1997). I remember that in the eyes of the World, South Africa and Zimbabwe both won their battle in defense of Human Rights. However, this too has been largely ignored by our Mass Media, which preferred to talk only about Africa in regard to the confirmation of the French condemnation concerning the "anti-condom" speech made by the Pope last week during the official visit to Cameroon.
After all, the circle narrows: the Pope goes to talk in Africa about things he doesn't know while Africa doesn't allow the Dalai Lama to talk about things he knows very well, and according to the logic of "reverse meritocracy" that prevails in the (ex) Beautiful Country, the French stance (I swear if I'm reborn, I want to do it in Nancy) against Benedict XVI is "offensive and illogical" and I add that it's quite illogical that the good Milanes citizens didn't notice the "Hotel" mentioned above sooner, but perhaps they mistook that multitude for one person: as it's known, at first glance all Chinese look the same.
Who knows if the Dalai Lama (forcibly of Chinese nationality since '49) would have something to say about this cliché: we could invite him to talk about it but let's not ask Raiset. He might risk not getting the Visa.
We Italians have in common with other humans only the difficulty of numbering sequences "in Roman style".
