The kathodiko journey continues after a two-year wait, discovering the rich undergrowth of the Marche region, once again with a double release: the first volume is dedicated to more direct, heavier sounds, in a nutshell more rock, the second volume is beautifully varied with space for electronics, post-rock, various improvisations, and more expanded, often instrumental tracks; 27 tracks in total, all free, not bad.
If March(e)Ingegno Sonoro Vol. 1 had made us discover several interesting bands, Volume 3 is no less: the best episodes, for me, Tralanimo e Lombra by the Senigallians Dadamatto, indie punk rock with caviar, and the hallucinated Carl by Lebowski (Jesi - Chiaravalle), a formation that has grown significantly from previous efforts; also worth noting is Capestro, a raw and rough vintage piece by Vel (the only band also present two years ago, but surely no one will complain...), Pythagoras by the Pesarese Altro, again not exactly recent (it's from "Candore" 2002) but it's always a pleasure to listen to them, and the Butcher Mind Collapse, born from a cross between Guinea Pig and the same Lebowski about a year ago, neurotic and hysterical, in short exquisitely crazy.
As for the rest, from the most straightforward indie rock (OginoKnaus) to hardcore and punk (Affluente, Rotacupa, Cyberpork), from the most neurotic noise rock (Lleroy) to even heavier sounds (the tool-like Mothus, the melvins-like Splatter, and the stoner rock of Need Her Liver), here there's something for everyone; we may not always be at the top level, but overall a more than decent compilation.
Volume 4 is even more interesting: there's space for the wild and unrestrained chaos of From Hands (two-thirds of Sedia), the simultaneously hypnotic and frenetic post-rock of Petraniura, the excellent Passeggiata nel tubo, music-box-circus melody of Contradamerla, the guitar experiments of Macerata's Andrea Scopetta and Jesi's Stefano Coppari; and again, the playful pop with an electronic twist of Magnitostok and Scarapocchio, the psychic disturbances of the amazing IOIOI, a sort of Japanese-style, electrified, and less satanic Diamanda Galas, the lively indie rock of Chiaravalle's Exend and the more hypnotic and expanded one of Jesi's Eddy Currents (both perhaps would have found a better place in Volume 3, especially the former, but so be it...); finally, the brilliant Margot, authors of a long ride of catchy and ethereal free lounge sounds, the impalpable electronics of Lorenzo Brutti (aka Dll, aka John Deere...) and the more anarchic electronics of Luca Confusione, author of Rompicollo (pure sounds soon devolving into chaos definitely less pure) and Krill (in duo with the enigmatic Narvalo, a magma of dirty frequencies and noise... Krill, not Narvalo).
As you may have guessed, there's a lot going on, very good and for every taste... a word to the wise. A great project set up by the webzine Kathodik, an attempt to give visibility to a scene (if it can be called a scene) that deserves it, long left out of the main underground paths that matter and only recently the subject of emerging interest; while waiting for the next Volumes, download people, download.
