LA RECENSIONE

Various Artists – “LAMENT” (Peter Gabriel) – co-producer Nigel Rolfe (1992)

Very sad but deep and well-made album, which manages to take you to the cold countries of Ireland and give a perfect vision, for those who have never been, highlighted by the excellent work of artists known by Peter Gabriel.

Celtic harps, bagpipes, violins, cellos, flutes and clarinets, uilleann pipes, piano, voices and accordions and whatever else pulsates in the cold of Ireland. It is totally classical and captivating, reaching all the sensitive and dreamy souls of places, perhaps never reached, without neglecting anything, in short, it is genuine and full of local life and memories, every little detail is well highlighted and never neglected, including the pain of this country singing its dead...

Lament For The Dead Of The North” - Davy Spillane – the gentle song of a solitary tree
The Bright Lady” - Declan Masterson – simply a wave of notes flowing from a bagpipe that describes the funeral commemoration of their dead
Sean O Duibhir A’ Ghleanna” - Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill – her only splendid and exclusive voice narrates the repressed pain of centuries from this people
An Droighnean Donn” - Paddy Glackin – the solo violin brings out such beauty for the right Irish setting
Plunkett” - Michael O Suilleabhain – the most beautiful track of the whole Album, the piano notes create the image of a frozen evening where the silver of the moon reflects in the waters of a lake lost in greenery, and it is truly a stunning piece
One Breath” - Alanna O’ Kelly – her solo voice in a heart-rending wail in delirium
Port Na bPucai” - Tony MacMahon – the typical accordion caresses the whole chorus
Danny Boy” - Christy Moore – his voice accompanied by drums, tells the story, indeed, of a boy, Danny
Taim-se Im ChodhladhSean Potts – and here come again the legendary bagpipes parading throughout the track “Sliabh Geal gCua” - Kevin Conneff – a solo of unique sadness
Carolan’s Devotion” - John Sheahan – the violin crowns a heart-rending race
An Bonnan Bui” - Sean Potts – a sweet flute flutters over endless fields
John O’ Dwyer Of The Glen” - Neil Martin – the sad and funeral hymn emanating from a cello.
And an extraordinary closing with “O’ Carolan’s Farewell” - Derek Bell – a velvet feather embodied by the harp

These are all spiritual remembrance tracks of the life of the Irish people.
