It may not make sense to write this review, but since I'm here, and I've practically done all the Ozzy reviews myself, I'll describe the album in question.
There's probably little to say about a tribute to an artist, especially if it's the Madman. If you're metal fans, this CD has plenty for you to sink your teeth into, in the sense that you can listen to great metal musicians play the songs of one of the fathers of the genre. Among them stand out Malmsteen, Kotzen, Kilmister, and Gilbert.
Here's the tracklist with the names of the respective performers:
1. Mr. Crowley - Tim Owens, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tim Bogert, Tommy Aldridge, Derek Sherinian.
2. Over the Mountain - Mark Slaughter, Brad Gillis, Gary Moon, Eric Singer, Paul Taylor.
3. Desire - Lemmy Kilmister, Richie Kotzen, Tony Franklin, Vinnie Colaiuta.
4. Crazy Train - Dee Snider, Doug Aldrich, Tony Levin, Jason Bonham.
5. Goodbye to Romance - Lisa Loeb, Dweezil Zappa, Michael Porcaro, Stephen Ferrone, Michael Sherwood.
6. Hellraiser - Joe Lynn Turner, Steve Lukather, Billy Sherwood, Jay Schellen, Paul Taylor.
7. Shot in the Dark - Jeff Scott Soto, Bruce Kulick, Ricky Phillips, Pat Torpey, Derek Sherinian.
8. Children of the Grave - Jeff Martin, Paul Gilbert, John Alderete, Scott Travis.
9. Paranoid - Vince Neil, George Lynch, Stu Hamm, Gregg Bissonette.
10. Suicide Solution - Adam Paskowitz, Peter Perdichizzi, James Book, Nick Lucero.
11. I Don't Know - Jack Blades, Reb Beach, Jeff Pilson, Bobby Blotzer, Paul Taylor.
An excellent choice of pieces, and great performances especially of Over the Mountain, Crazy Train, Suicide Solution, Children of the Grave, and Desire sung by the legendary Lemmy, co-author of the song (and also others from No More Tears).
The songs that, in my opinion, were ruined are Mr. Crowley, due to Malmsteen's solo, who, for once in his life, could have avoided the usual (insipid) neo-classical shred, which, okay, is his style, but considering what the original solo by the great Randy was, your arms kind of drop at the insipid Malmsteen execution. And then it just doesn't fit with the rest of the song!
The other is Goodbye Romance, which seems a bit sugary in this version, and with this I don't want to criticize the singer, as I have always liked female voices in metal. The sweetness is due to the ensemble and the performance in general, or maybe it's just my impression.
In conclusion, an album for Ozzy enthusiasts and fans. Rating 4, as the craftsmanship is good but I'd never give it a 5, due to the two songs I mentioned and because it's just a tribute.
