Tribute Albums often do not represent anything particularly interesting. It can be pleasant, at times, to listen to covers of favorite songs. But spending 20 Euros on an album that offers nothing beyond remakes seems, personally, excessive and wasteful in terms of both time and money.

Despite the above disapproval, let's consider one of the many tributes dedicated to the eternal Joy Division. "A Means To An End: The Music Of Joy Division," released in 1996 and quickly overlooked,

A slew of indie bands (punk, alt.rock, post-rock, etc...) moderately rearrange the sacred material composed towards the end of the '70s by the famous Mancunians.

Moby (as cunning as a fox) reconstructs an epic and rocking version of "New Dawn Fades". An appreciable track, one that film buffs will remember for being included in the soundtrack of "Heat-La Sfida."

Girls VS Boys, on the other hand, undertake a disoriented reimagining of "She's Lost Control" which, for the record, leaves me a bit puzzled. Something's missing! Perhaps the chill that characterized the original? I couldn't say!

Interesting, but little more, is the attempt at reinterpretation of "Atmosphere" by Codeine. The track is not overturned, but it's not reproduced uncreatively either.

Kendra Smith strikes with her intensity in reprising "Heart And Soul" but the spotlight is stolen by Godheadsilo and Face To Face.

In reinterpreting "They Walked In Line", Godheadsilo give it all with an enviable dose of flair.

Face To Face aren't kidding either and apply "head and heart" in front of a track like "Interzone"

Allow me to say, the rest sounds a bit pompous and not very impactful. Honeymoon Stitch (whom I didn't even know by name) prove tremendously soporific while Miranda Stanton offers a sugary and utterly unnecessary cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

The absence of the cover of "Shadowplay" is both colossal and unforgivable. But perhaps that was for the best.

Go ahead and give this tribute a listen. But don't expect anything comparable to the originals... not even remotely!!
