It's not that I feel the need to invent a new form of praise for “Una pezza di Lundini”, the new surrealol program of Rai's late night show, in this sense I stop immediately and refer you to Aldo Grasso's review or the endorsement from The Vision magazine, which I haven't yet consulted but will surely have published an article titled “Valerio Lundini is saving Italian TV” and well. A small parenthesis: for years Italian TV has been a solid body adrift, it cannot and should not be saved by a program of this kind.
For the sake of clarity, Lundini is good, okay Pif was better but it must be said that the Roman comedian possesses great creativity and in each episode, he stages a variety of sketches, jokes, and situations that make you want to watch it just out of curiosity to know what will happen, or who will be the guest in the studio. But since no one wants to read another puff piece in the form of a review, we will now list two major flaws of this type of program that no one, as far as I know, has yet written about:
1) the host: I realize that this is only half a flaw since it is obviously also the strength. Lundini has the right physique du rôle, in the sense that he doesn't have it, and he is capable of making you understand that he listens to Ghostface Killah without ever explicitly saying it. However, it must be said that he suffers from the worst form of narcissism, that of someone in love with their own wit, and people like that sooner or later wear you out. It's sometimes hard to find the strength to enjoy yourself in front of a comedian who is, essentially, just indulging in his originality. It's the type where you can smile but be careful not too much, otherwise you're a boomer, superficial, or above all already seen.
2) the audience: between social media and YouTube, the comments section on the videos of this program is a complete mess. Every time, it’s an incredibly boring competition over who can say the most post-ironic, intelligent, and surreal thing. The users obviously have names like "Carlo Vanzina" or "GiO/RgiO MaS/trOTa" and it's just the starting point in a spiral of meta-irony-post-dank-whatever that each time sets the development of human humor back by three evolutionary stages. You understand things are not going well when someone comments "finally Italy has its Eric Andre Show" and that they are now irretrievable when you find written "daje, you managed to import Eric Andre, I thought worse". Honestly, can it be considered a success to bring your own niche of listeners to Rai when it’s just a bunch of unhappy and repressed jerks?
