Lato (Dj) and Fabri Fibra (Mc), known as "Uomini di mare," are a duo from Senigallia (AN), formed in 1995 with a home-recorded demo on a multitrack. This mini-CD from 2004 significantly departs from the album "Sindrome di fine millennio" (2000). The beats are very original and perfectly complement Fibra's style. The straightforward and sharp lyrics, along with self-irony, make the record spicy and easy to understand, without the fast wordplay present in the previous work. The celebration of HipHop and themselves doing it better than others is entirely absent. The MC, born in '76, talks to us like a friend proud of past choices, offering stories and advice, joking also with some vulgarity.
"Appena chiami" is the "love song" of the EP. Just over a minute dominated by driving scratches. "Appena chiami sai che vengo, anche se fa un freddo tremendo, qualunque cosa poi la prendo, lo sai non mi tengo..."
"La cosa più facile" is a critique of those who tell us what to do or how to behave. In an effort to live up to the lauded models in our society and constantly presented by advertising, many people have invested time and money in fashion, makeup, gyms, surgeries, unpaid overtime at work, and sessions with psychologists! All this just to possibly end up in depression due to poor results. Fabri Fibra jokes about this lack of self-acceptance and how foolish it is not to have one's own identity, inviting each of us to find and respect it, rejoicing in what we have and highlighting that there are much worse problems. "Lo vuoi un consiglio? Non seguire nessuno. Sai perché? È la cosa più facile..."
"Non farò mai" is a playful rhyme that highlights the economic issues we are facing, linked to unemployment and the introduction of the euro with rising prices. "Belli o brutti il tempo è come l'euro ci incula a tutti, calcoli come non andare a picco, ma per avere i soldi o nasci ricco o ti fai inculare da uno sceicco, poi giro con lo sguardo di Castellitto..."
"Anch’io" talks about our envy for others' happiness. This is because perhaps the right partner hasn't been found yet or one feels exploited at work. Fibra doesn't lose heart: he believes in a better future by focusing on his own abilities and maybe leaving behind this ridiculous Italy. "Faccio fatica a mantenermi a modo mio, il mio collega con due figli in paranoia mi risponde anche io, in confronto a me guadagna il doppio è un semiarchitetto ex fumatore d'oppio..."
"La mia vita" is a piece as sad as it is true. It seems to recount his misadventures without feeling shame, keeping his head high for always thinking with his own head. It is a mirror on the bitterest and rawest world, where sooner or later we all get wrapped in insecurities, risking meeting the wrong friends. "Quand’ero piccolo avevo un amico, a casa mia lui giocava al bandito, quando capitò la prima occasione, in camera dei miei rubò più di un milione, da quella volta ho subito capito che per i soldi c'è sempre un amico; sai c'è di peggio e ne sono sicuro c'è chi per emergere a dato anche il culo..."
Following are the 5 instrumental tracks to better appreciate Lato's work and possibly try karaoke.
It can be said that with a mini-CD of 5 tracks these "Uomini di mare" manage to give a jolt to Hip-Hop, but unfortunately in the music market having a couple of oars and the enthusiasm to get there is not enough, rather noisy and well-sponsored engines are needed.
