They are one of the most influential bands that have ever been heard in American indie rock, but few remember them, even fewer know them, and certainly no one mentions them anymore. Yet Unrest:
1) with their debut "Tink of Southeast," dated 1987, anticipated Fugazi and their post-hardcore buddies, because from the Hardcore they had been playing since 1984, they moved to a lively mix of various interpretative styles, all very edgy and beautiful.
2) with the subsequent "Malcolm X Park," dated 1988, they anticipated none other than all of Post Rock (I bet Slint listened to this album a hundred times) with predominantly instrumental tracks that are VERY but VERY deviant hardcore and post-hardcore and Indie in general.

Now you understand, with such a significant body of mostly essential work (because even among their later albums, there isn't a bad one even if you paid for it in gold), it was hard to choose the first one to review for DeBaser. And for me, the one I'm reviewing isn't even the best. However, it is the most, let's say, "famous." And above all, it's the most varied, so the one that best summarizes them alone. Just think that "Suki" sounds like the Feelies in a pop version... "Imperial" is a sort of hypothetical psychedelic/progressive version of one of Sonic Youth's most melodic arpeggios; "June" is one of the most beautiful ballads of indie rock. And I could continue with the other twelve tracks, but it would be pointless; I've given these comparisons with other bands to give you an idea. But Unrest is Unrest; crazy, unique and absolutely heterogeneous. Completely dedicated, the only common trait to each piece, to dismantling and reassembling in an unpredictable way (but not for that necessarily expressionless or uncommunicative) each track, incredibly cross-boundary but unmistakable. In short, an institution, and a real one at that.
