It must have been one of those sweltering afternoons that have just passed, but I'm not completely sure (since my memory is starting to play tricks on me), that, while wandering the internet, I came across these fine folks. I was just looking for a Sonic Youth song when my eye caught a MySpace link. I think: oh... Another Italian band imitating Moore and company (as if the first Marlene weren't enough), I'm intrigued, I listen to a few songs and read the biography. I discover that the Unmade Bed originated in the cheerful Florence back in 2004, initially under the name My Best Friend's Birthday, initiated by a certain Lorenzo Gambacorta, drummer of a Cure tribute band, and that they recently released their first full-length album, "Loom", with the independent label Seahorse Recordings.
One might be inclined to think of a meeting between Sonic Youth and The Cure, but that's not the case.
Although the echo of Bobby Smith and company can be heard, leaving a certain mark, not only musically but also in the lyrics, often tied to night and darkness in their whimsical and dreamy nature, the extensive use of feedback, resulting in ethereal shoegaze sounds, the very lo-fi pop attitude of the tracks, and the pursuit of sweet and almost naïve melodic intertwining make the sound much more akin to bands like My Bloody Valentine (so one could almost say they're second cousins to Sonic Youth), Pavement, with a hint of Sigur Ros and post-rock, and a deep 70's psychedelia.
The result is very similar to the song of a mother, just whispered and a bit offbeat, who sings a lullaby to her child, accompanied by a rusty and creaky music box, the sweetness of falling asleep which doesn't lack a hint of unease for the awakening.
Reach for the morning light
Every night
Reach for the morning light
Scare of the morning light
Every night
Scare of the morning light
A return journey to the cradle, or the perfect soundtrack for those (come on, there's a child hidden within all of us) who never left the cradle.
P.S. A little indie(ana) gem, the album is downloadable, entirely legally and for free (so put down that mule) from indiezone.it without registration. Enjoy listening.
