The Profile

Umberto Eco (1932–2016) was an Italian novelist, essayist, philosopher, and semiotician, celebrated for The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum.

Born in Alessandria, Piedmont, on 5 January 1932; died in Milan on 19 February 2016. A leading semiotician and longtime professor at the University of Bologna, Eco became internationally renowned for blending scholarship and storytelling, notably in The Name of the Rose (1980), later adapted for screen, and in subsequent novels exploring conspiracy, history, and the craft of forgery.

Three DeBaser reviews circle Eco’s big hitters: a playful yet incisive take on Il nome della rosa, mixed but affectionate impressions of the picaresque Baudolino, and a strong nod to Il cimitero di Praga’s anatomy of conspiracy and forgery. Themes of medieval intrigue, learned playfulness, and the mechanics of myth and fake documents recur. Overall tone: admiring, occasionally skeptical, always engaged.
