Discovered almost by chance through the fantastic algorithmic world of Spotify, “Bloom The Ego” was definitely a pleasant surprise. This is specifically the new album from the Italian progressive metal/djent band ULTIMA, which after an EP with typically metalcore features (“Meritamun”), has decided to take a path that is certainly more complex but full of rewards if approached with the right ideas. And here there are plenty of interesting elements, starting with the attention given to songwriting, which, in addition to being based on the previously mentioned genres, sees the pursuit of melody as its ultimate goal. In the ten tracks presented here, one can especially notice the quintet's desire to seamlessly blend their metal-oriented DNA with melody, whether through classic vocal dualism (expressed effectively here) or through their ability to create varied and intriguing sonic scenarios from song to song. Thus, we transition from the in your face approach of “Out Of Bounds” and “Wolves” to the desire to lighten the atmosphere with “My Story Is Yours,” all without any disruption to the listening experience. If I had to name one artistic influence, I would say Between The Buried And Me, especially regarding the sophistication in songwriting. A very interesting album that deserves at least a listen from those who frequent djent and progressive metal.
