Tyrannosaurus Rex was the early incarnation of Marc Bolan's group, initially a duo with Steve Peregrin Took, performing psychedelic folk and later moving toward an electric sound before shortening the name to T. Rex.

Marc Bolan led the band; Steve Peregrin Took was the original percussionist and was later replaced by Mickey Finn. Early records were produced by Tony Visconti. John Peel championed the group on radio. The band name was shortened to T. Rex around 1970.

DeBaser's reviews praise Tyrannosaurus Rex's early psychedelic-folk records and Marc Bolan's songwriting. Critics note the band's transition from acoustic, Tolkien-inspired folk to a more electric, rock-oriented sound. Lineup changes (Steve Peregrin Took replaced by Mickey Finn) and production by Tony Visconti are discussed.
