Like when you accidentally see an old flame after many years and find those details intact, a smile, a glance, the backside, which perhaps made you fall in love. Always present details that spark the idea of trying again. That, understandably scaled, is the effect the first listen of Typo Magic’s debut had on me.
This Baltimore band has been active for years, but only in 2012 did their debut “Golden Gurls” arrive, offering sounds that come from a stereo from the early '90s, when on my turntable spun Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Seam. They literally dive into those sounds with which I grew up.
The same gently distorted guitars, the same homemade drums, the same bored voice opening up in sudden melodic surges. Certainly nothing new but so much passion and nostalgia.
But if My Bloody Valentine can afford to revive a sound, which they invented, after 20 years and nobody accuses them of being incurable nostalgics, why can’t Typo Magic do the same, and do it very well?
Judgment given with heart.
