TURCO - Via Roma
(Putsch Records)
Turco considers herself a songwriter. And indeed, in Via Roma, her debut “full-length,” she tells us stories, in Italian, that are like a diary of lived sensations, of emotions that recur in everyday life. Nothing outlandish. The “sustainable lightness of being” of Turco, but also of all of us, told with a pleasant voice. But what we liked most is the musical approach, which, with Turco being a multi-instrumentalist, could only be "eclectic," but above all, very well-crafted. Starting with the rhythmic setup; basses and beats well blended together that highlight an electro approach, at times almost punk in the Tresor style (the legendary super dark Berlin label, very acid and edgy like, at times, Turco’s basslines). Just listen to “Ogni volta” or “Ansia” to understand. There is also a skillful use of synths, particularly in “Ansia,” where anxiety becomes not only a dark feeling but also hypnosis (and the synths indeed create a trance-like mood). A niche record? Not at all. Turco's voice, at times childish, other times aggressive and very sensual, is pop enough to make the album accessible. Clear evidence is “treni,” a devastating synth-pop track with an uptempo rhythm that we hope will have some chance on our blind national networks.
