The Tumulus Anmatus are a trio formed in 2006 in Lecco, with three-quarters coming from the province of Lecco and one-quarter from the province of Como. I am fortunate to be a good friend of MG4259, the drummer, and have even played with him in a different musical project. They had already impressed me when I went to see them in their rehearsal room at the end of 2008, and it didn't surprise me at all that about a year later they were planning to release their first studio album for the German label Art Of Propaganda, after an excellent demo released in 2007. This also led to a more aggressive restyling of the logo.
What particularly characterizes this excellent album? First of all, a very personal touch from the band members, both in the vocals of the charismatic bassist/singer Tumulash, in the guitar of Gerion, who delights with excellent solo parts on several occasions, and in the steamroller and tank behind the drums, MG4259.
"Ave Casus Mundi", a Latin title like the group's name, is overall an excellent product. The album starts with a chilling Intro and retraces the macabre themes already by the song titles: the title in fact means Hail Fall of the World, and in their presentation, the Tumulus simply wrote: “Tumulus Anmatus has already finished the recording session of their first full-length album. This infamous opera standing against the modern world is composed of 8 chants, celebrating the universal fall.” Umbrae Ante Solem and the title track are one the natural continuation of the other. In certain passages, it truly feels like passing through the cursed corridors of the underworld, as in Baratro. There are excellent atmospheres of apparent calm, arpeggiated, that burst into a pure storm of sound as in Post Mortem. My favorite is undoubtedly Voci Dal Profondo, a true masterpiece of the album, with its truly powerful vocal line and its odes of “revenge.” The solos are also of exquisite craftsmanship, especially the double one in Ecce Homo.
You can have an excellent taste of the album on the band's official Myspace.
I think that in the vast Black Metal scene, it's one of those bands that deserve recognition, an album that could perhaps be an excellent springboard. The debut of the Cursed Tumulus is an album that in its genre is a real jewel.
