Tuatara is an instrumental supergroup formed in Seattle in 1996. Early lineup and contributors include Justin Harwood, Peter Buck, Barrett Martin and Skerik; the project blends jazz, world and rock influences.

Formed as a collaborative project with an interest in soundtrack-like instrumental music; their 1997 album Breaking The Ethers received positive reviews for its genre-spanning, cinematic approach.

Bleak praises Breaking The Ethers as a successful, varied album that blends jazz, funk, American folk, psychedelia and world influences. The review highlights tracks such as "Serengeti", "The Getaway" (guest Mike McCready) and "Saturday Night Church" and rates the album 4/5. Bleak recommends trying this 1997 album before Trading With The Enemy.

For:Listeners of instrumental, world-influenced and cinematic music; fans of Peter Buck, Barrett Martin and experimental jazz/folk fusion.

Born as a spontaneous project aimed at creating soundtracks, the group, composed of Justin Harwood (Luna, bass) Peter Buck (REM, guitar) Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, drums and percussion) and Skerik from Critters Buggin (saxophones) began to appear live occasionally and started to give concrete form to a real album: namely, the present "Breaking The Ethers."
