Pure as a "Lily"? I don't know if it is, everything and its opposite has been said about Tricarico, meaning the doubt whether he "Is or pretends" is always lurking. However, the guy seems genuine, authentic. At least, that’s how it is for me. Nothing is ever remembered about Sanremo the day after; is it a coincidence that many, myself included, remember only him from this year's festival? What does this hypersensitive, fragile creature have to do with those old fogeys in the front rows? Nothing. THAT’S why he was appreciated: he was a fish out of water, an authentically curious character to be closely observed. It seems, in fact, that he might break at any moment. Like a violin string too tense... Or out of tune due to off-key notes. I thought of this because I read he studied at the Conservatory. Transverse flute, I think. Well, on May 4th he was in Reggio, and I went to see him. Piazza full of amused people, who were there to see the little being from Mars bring a breath of fresh air, the one you breathe in his parts... The air is that of a terrified chick, to be cuddled. But under the skin, perhaps, there are thorns.
There were families, girls, quite a few passersby who eventually stayed. And the stop lingered until the end. In his own way, an entirely original way, Tricarico is good. Everyone was waiting for "Vita tranquilla", which won the Critics' Award, and the Milanese singer introduced it like this: "This year I went to Sanremo (No kidding!). I thought it was a beautiful city, but instead, it was... ugly!". Um, okay, he may not be a great orator, but hooray for honesty. Some laughed at his lyrics, a bit elementary, like the one in "La neve blu" or especially "Drago" or "Cavallino". Yes, the lyrics are simple, immediate, just listen to "I love the water because it asked me nothing, I love August because it asked me nothing, I love bread because it asked me nothing" ... but he is capable of this and more.
When he sang "Musica", splendid and profound, the audience was spellbound, and when it was time for "Un'altra possibilità", someone got emotional, I could bet on it! It's here that Tricarico alludes to the pain experienced as a child, even if impersonally. In reality, the most autobiographical piece remains "Io sono Francesco", with the famous lines "Puttana la maestra", who had asked him to write the theme about his father, disregarding that Tricarico’s father was no longer around. If it's true that the experiences you’ve lived stick to you in the way you behave, move, speak, Francesco cannot hide. But that's okay, he is a real person amidst the many fake ones populating the music industry. Touching, forehead-kiss endearing. Another ipse dixit was: "In Italy, too much coffee is consumed. It's not like in Denmark, where none is consumed" (!!). I heard someone behind me saying: "How sane he sounds!". Indeed. But the sane one wrote "La situazione non è buona" for Adriano, and in fact, he dedicated it to him. Encore? "Vita tranquilla", of course.
Great concert, honestly above expectations. He also had truly talented musicians with him.
N.B.: don't miss Mirko, the goofy alter ego on Mai dire Martedì! He imitated him with "Voglio una vita trazolla la la, because it's since I was born that the chaos won't leave meeeeee". As he says, "He's the only singer in Italy directly controlled by aliens". Too true.
