What can I say, the best album ever by Mr. Glenn Hughes, the master and performer of the entire record.

Giant leaps have been made since 'Medusa', already a respectable album, and this time there is a significant shift from the Paul Rodgers/Free influences of the previous record, to acquire a then-unknown mix of raw rock-blues and Soul music, a blend between Cream and Stevie Wonder!

Strange that this album hasn't been celebrated and isn't recognized as a forerunner of the genre, being a musical offering truly ahead of its time.

The songs that best represent the musical proposal of this strange trio are two: "Way Back To The Bone" and "Coast to Coast". The first is a vigorous and powerful Funky/rock/blues with a formidable bass riff where Dave Holland's precise drumming also stands out. The guitar riff played in sync with the bass is considered the most exhilarating moment of the record, impossible to remain indifferent in front of this wild Punchy Funky!!!
The second, the opposite of the first, is a superb soul ballad with a wonderful pedal steel marking the "maj 7" chords and a memorable vocal performance by Mr. Hughes. Besides these two masterpieces, there is "What is a Woman's role" driven by a beautiful Rhodes played by Glenn and an absolutely irresistible surprise funky/Rock finale, "Will Our Love End" picks up the thread of "Coast to coast" with the presence of a saxophone, vibraphone, and Hughes' overdubbed choruses creating a great atmosphere... A bit inferior are "Feelin' So Much Better Now" and "Loser" yet still pleasant and energetically played..

The overall sound of the album is reminiscent of "Play me out", Glenn Hughes' solo debut shortly after his departure from the Purple, also due to the presence of the complete Trapeze. This testifies to how the discourse of Trapeze was forcibly interrupted by Glenn Hughes' enlistment in the "Deep Purple" army... Unfortunately, if this mix of Funky/British Rock Blues/Soul was unheard of in 1972, by 1978 it was well-known, and thus the album went unnoticed.. But we'll talk about that another time....

Returning to "We are the music..", ultimately an album nowadays practically unavailable on CD but for fans of Glenn Hughes and Funky rock, absolutely a must-have and seek out. Top marks, in my opinion, well-deserved!

01   Keepin' Time (00:00)

02   Coast To Coast (00:00)

Goin' today, just passin'
The road I know so well
Seems the more I ride you
You give me more
You'll tell
And if I try
Soon it will show
To keep me strong
And know that I've had times
So good
From coast to coast
Leavin' my hard times behind

And if I try
Soon it will show
To keep me strong
And know that I've had time
So good from coast to coast
Leavin' my hard times behind

Oh I love the coast
I love the coast

Oh yeah, oh yeah I love the coast
