Toto Cutugno-I Want the Soul (1979)

After trying in many ways since the early seventies: first with Toto and the Tati (!?) where he was a drummer, obtaining an unbelievable-contract with Carosello and sowing unexpected successes with ALBATROS of FLIGHT AZ 504. Then our Toto Cutugno superman in 1978 started his solo career with the song Donna donna mia, which became the theme for the replicant cyborg program Mike Bongiorno, Scommettiamo. It was a smash hit. The 45 rpm record sold massively and made it into the top 10 of our domestic hit parade, and then into those in France and Spain. The same year, like a lovesick replicant, he wrote Soli for his all-time vocal idol, Adriano Celentano, which instantly became another summer hit and an evergreen for the crooner.

In 1979, he recorded the 45 rpm I Want the Soul - which became a major success in France as well, followed by the album of the same name, which included other songs such as Soli, Donna donna mia. I have always had mixed feelings about our Toto, as on one hand I can't stand Celentano nor his replicants, and on the other hand, he is a good songwriter with a disarming naivety, populism, and communicativity; which borders on genius, as demonstrated by the truly global success of some of his songs, especially among Italian expatriates, Latin and Slavic peoples. Listening to songs like Flash, the theme song for the clone of the omnipresent Mike Bongiorno, I hear certain roaring guitar riffs that convince me even more that Toto could have been part of the Kiss in America, I'm sure, his vocal and facial resemblance to the platformed frontman is impressive. Or he could have taken John Travolta's place in Saturday night fever: we can't be sure.

However, his image of an Italian boy, with testosterone bursting from his hairy chest, cape and crucifix, jacket and hyperblown hair, left me perplexed. It seemed something alien and amusing at the same time, also because radio and TV forced us to listen to him. Ah, the magic of superchart shows and telegatti.

Yes, I feel like a bit of city chaos
and get you the record you like best
and with my racing bike to the attic
and then what do we do?

Soli
la pelle come un vestito
soli
nel cuore guarda chi c': io e te
soli
le briciole nel letto
soli
ma stretti un p di pi
solo io, solo tu

e il tuo pudore amando rende il corpo tuo pi vero
sei bella quando vuoi
bambina, donna e poi
non mi deludi mai
 cos che mi vai

Soli
lasciando la luce accesa
soli
mangiando un panino in due, io e te

lasciando la luce accesa
soli
mangiando un panino in due, io e te
