On June 29, 2007, "Alibi", the new CD by Tormento, was released under Sony BMG. The undeniable talent of the 'most complete MC we have on the national territory is not lacking in any of the 14 tracks that make this record, in my opinion, one of the best of the year. The contributions of numerous musicians, most notably Michael Baker who crafted simply thrilling beats, with the simultaneous absence of featuring artists, makes this CD even more interesting.
It starts with "Non Ce N'è", a powerful track perhaps meant to challenge those who believed on the eve of the CD that the rapper, having a major label contract, would sell out his style. Then it moves to two other bombs of the record: "The Bootyshaker" and "A Fuoco": in both, the rapper captures the negative situation of Italian hip-hop these days; the two songs have some elements that might escape on a first listen...
Then we move to the second part of the CD, more soul, where Tormento confirms his inspiration to the genre: it's worth noting how "Rasta Qui" is a track written in collaboration with Giorgia and that the original version included a duet with her; a shame not to hear these two splendid voices together.
With "Bomba", "Ma Dai", and "Lo Fai Benissimo", Torme shows his more carefree side with powerful beats in the first and third and very summer-like and original in the second, which was also the first single released from the CD.
The final part of the CD contains 4 tracks of truly enviable quality where once again all the attention shown by the rapper in the care of sounds and wordplay is evident: "Come Sei" and "Così Come Sono" are more than valid examples. In "Alibi", then, Torme shuts the mouths of those who find excuses indeed by promoting only certain projects (incidentally short-term) and investing little, too little, in true Italian hip-hop.
In conclusion: the CD is recommended to everyone, but especially to skeptics who have doubted more than once the rapper who, at 31 years old, has certainly made his best solo CD.
