If there's one of those groups that helps and is good for music, it's definitely Tool. And if they come to Rome to present their latest album live, it's an opportunity to seize on the fly. And so it was.
Tool makes a unique kind of Progressive Rock-Alternative Metal, composed of complex tablatures and very long songs. In my humble opinion, there's not one of their albums that's not worth buying, because they're all wonderful: "Undertow," "Lateralus," the latest "1000 Days," and especially "Aenima," which calling a masterpiece is an understatement. So after various vicissitudes, on June 21, I managed to go and enjoy this pure spectacle. Initially, the venue for the concert was the tennis central, thus outdoors and according to me, it would have been much better, but unfortunately either for technical reasons or due to the excessive audience presence (I haven't figured it out yet), the show was moved to the Palaghiaccio of Marino, certainly a larger place but with worse acoustics because it's indoors. Anyway, it doesn’t matter, I am sure it will be a show. I arrive around 8 PM and to park the car, you have to drive around the Palaghiaccio millions of times, but luckily in the end, my father and I manage to find a spot, though amidst cursing because parking with cramps is a real hassle. After buying the t-shirt with all the tour dates, I enter the arena and must say there was indeed a lot of audience. A demonstration that Tool is a much-loved and appreciated band by the Romans and beyond.
Without even a supporting special guest, as was announced, around 10 PM the 4 Americans take the stage and after the initial intro "Lost Keys" the show begins with a grand "Rosetta Stoned" song lasting about 15 minutes. Excellent performance during this song, as well as all the others, but you can already tell from here as already mentioned that the audio is not the best. However, it was a very good idea to place behind the stage some big screens on which various images were projected, including Tool's videos. And so, amidst the collective joy, the stunning "Stinkfist" is played in its entirety, as almost always live. Another piece from "Anima" follows, namely "46 & 2" then returning to the latest songs like "Jambi" truly magnificent, played flawlessly. And now another classic of the band: "Schism" is next on the setlist and truly excites all present, satisfied so far with the extraordinary spectacle being watched. Following that, "Right In Two" from the latest album is offered and then "Sober" with an intro-solo by Danny Carey behind the drums that gives chills, for its difficulty, beauty, and mastery in being played. Stunning!!!! "Sober" was obviously another extraordinary piece, which live delivers even more. And then comes "Lateralus" yet another masterpiece song by Tool. As I said initially, there isn't a Tool song or album that I don't like, so I can only speak highly of them. The final duo is assigned to another extract from their latest album, namely "Vicarious" which was nothing short of fantastic and then the immortal "Aenima" of indescribable beauty. I know I can sometimes be repetitive in describing the songs, but I no longer know how to describe them, because their songs convey indescribable emotions, they convey power, they convey the joy of listening to music, etc. In short, the concert ends with their hugs and greetings dedicated to us, they enter the backstage and unfortunately, they won't come back out.
Excellent concert, during which Maynard sang the entire time turned around and the drummer gave a beastly performance, confirming himself among the best around for me. A pity for only the hour and forty duration of the concert, because for a 40 euro ticket at least 2 or 3 more songs could have been played, like the magnificent "Parabol-Parabola". However, a great show, which definitely leaves me satisfied. Rating: 9-. I return home, happy with what I have witnessed. Bye.
