I have never written a review; this is the first, perhaps the last, but the album in question is so important that it compelled me to write one.
I remember very well the sensations I felt when I listened to it for the first time, and I recall that it didn't drive me crazy; quite the opposite. The album begins in a great way with "Stinkfist", perhaps the most famous track by Tool and among the most beautiful in absolute terms. It's perhaps the most listenable track on the album also because it preserves the standards of song form; it is a mix of anger and desperation and is, for me, a masterpiece. The album continues with "Eulogy", a piece that is harder to assimilate with continuous rhythm changes. The pessimism continues with the following tracks until culminating in total rage in track 7, "Hooker with a penis", where Maynard seems to lash out against one of their fans. In "Aenima" instead, they tell the whole world to go f*** itself, and in particular, they have it in for L Ron Hubbard, the founder of a pseudo-religion of crap. I won't dwell on all the tracks, because they are all masterpieces.
An album which, as someone already wrote, changes the way of understanding music (does that sound insignificant to you?).
