TOILETTE MEMORIA, a name that for all lovers of Italian indie music is an explicit reference. It is indeed the title of a well-known album by Umberto Giardini, also known as Moltheni, one of the band's favorite artists, from whom they draw inspiration for their music.
There are four members of this group with origins in Pisa, the city where they live, but they come from different Sicilian-Puglian backgrounds. Paolo Ruta (guitar/vocals), Raffaele Picichè (piano/synth), Davide Iacono (drums/piano), and Stefania Lamusta (bass).
T.M. are among the best emerging music talents in our country and certainly promise more than well. Now, for this young group, it is truly time to show the Italian music world what they are capable of.
They are off to a good start with their debut album: "Io, tu e le turbe." A self-produced album recorded in Modica (Sicily) in the summer of 2007.
The album is an intense journey, with words that entirely merge with their complex and engaging sounds. An alternative post-rock (commonly referred to as indie) that shapes itself with choices typical of Italian songwriting, particularly with complex and intimate lyrics. Electronic solutions, psychedelia, and eclecticism are added, which is perhaps the exact word to summarize their musical choices.
The instruments intertwine skillfully, and the exchange of notes is pleasantly noticeable to the ear. Their music captivates from the very first listen, and the song lyrics convey just the right doses of sweet and bitter.
The first track is "acre calcare," entirely instrumental. And what better way to start a journey than by opening the mind of the attentive listener, giving them a blank slate for the words they want to hear. Everyone makes their own choice. The journey continues with 10 more tracks where the piano blends the different sounds without ever clashing with imposing snares and cymbals, decisively "rock" guitars, bass lines, sound distortions, and vocals that envelop and complete everything. And so come "goodbye," "saggezza," "senza annegare" and the imaginary journey continues, told through vivid emotions that become words and sounds again and again. With "nel vino" time stops, the sound slows, but it's not "...the end of the journey...". Snare drum and bass drum begin "il cielo volge al termine." It is essential to long focus on "l'alba ci disperde" and the story of unstable and precarious balances. And then again "quanti propositi" that recalls musicality like that of Radiohead, "nove lune" and the beautiful and sentimental "vetro" that prepares for the grand finale. The album concludes with "nell'attesa" an entire instrumental track. And our journey ends. Just as it began. Without Words.
