- An environment is defined as an atmosphere, or an influence that surrounds: a tint. While conventional background music is produced by stripping away any sense of doubt and uncertainty (and therefore all genuine interest) from the music, Ambient music retains these qualities. And while their intention is to “brighten” the environment by adding stimuli (thus supposedly relieving the tedium of routine activities and leveling the natural highs and lows of the body's rhythms), Ambient music is intended to induce calm and provide a space to think.
