Released yesterday in cinemas, "Sweeney Todd" is the latest film by Tim Burton, a dark (with the exception of sunny chapters like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" or "Big Fish") and cryptic director, who proves he can do just about anything: after animation, dramas, science fiction, horror, comedies, the director shows us that he is also capable in the musical field, maintaining the usual partnership with Johnny Depp, who plays the protagonist Sweeney Todd, a man unjustly imprisoned who, after being released, decides to take revenge when he discovers that his wife committed suicide out of despair.

Mr. Todd, with the help of a terrible baker, in love with him, opens a barbershop and carries out a bloody, very bloody vengeance that will target not only those who wronged him, but anyone who happens to come his way, including customers. As if nothing happened, blinded by love, the woman hides the corpses in her pies and suddenly becomes the best baker in London. However, the story takes crazy turns: throat slashed after throat slashed, rivers of blood, and the razor as the personification of hate, the film becomes a dark poetry between splendid and well-sung music by excellent and distinguished actors (the aforementioned Depp, the baker played by Tim Burton's wife, the actor who portrayed Borat, and others from the Harry Potter cast), with moments that are even comical and grotesque but still fail to bring about terror: blood is always around the corner and comes at the most unexpected moment...

Super shocking and splendid ending.

I have the impression that his style has reached such an awareness that it has become artificial and sterile compared to his early works.

A matter of marketing, I suppose.
