THE REVIEW

Solo work from 1995, with trusty Steve Shelley on drums and Tim Foljahn (of Two Dollar Guitars) on guitar, the album offers songs somewhat distant from the more noise canons of Sonic Youth and hints at the more accessible path they would soon take.

I admit, at the time I bought it only because I'm a SY completist, but today I find myself appreciating it and listening to it often!

Although there are no shortage of more "sonic" pieces (like the single "Ono Soul"), the album is perhaps (I dare say) power pop, but of great class. Perhaps it sounds like Thurston wanted the SY to sound at that time. Track 4 (Pretty Bad) and also track 12 (Cindy) are nice, but the whole album is still of a good level.

Go find it in some second-hand market and listen to it. I am convinced that, at least for Sonic fans, it will not be disliked at all.
