Throwing Muses are an American alternative/indie rock band formed in Newport, Rhode Island, fronted by Kristin Hersh with early contributions from Tanya Donnelly and drummer David Narcizo. They were the first American band to sign to the English label 4AD.

First American band signed to 4AD; early lineup included Kristin Hersh, Tanya Donnelly and David Narcizo. Tanya Donnelly left after The Real Ramona to join the Breeders and later formed Belly. The Real Ramona was released in 1991 and is frequently cited as a high point; House Tornado was released in 1988. Singles from The Real Ramona such as "Counting Backwards" and "Not too soon" received MTV rotation. Kristin Hersh is credited as primary songwriter on much of the band's material; reviews note her bipolar disorder.

Two DeBaser reviews praise Throwing Muses' blend of sharp melodies and unconventional rhythms. The Real Ramona (1991) is highlighted as a definitive, pop-leaning high point. House Tornado (1988) is noted for its skewed time signatures and psychedelic folk-wave textures. Reviews also note Tanya Donnelly's departure and Kristin Hersh's dominant songwriting role.

House Tornado is their second work released in 1988, and it confirms their penchant for a sort of psychedelic ballad characterized by the jingle jangle of guitars blending with rather complex rhythmic patterns, based on time signatures rarely frequented by other musicians in the scene.
