American rock septet formed in the late 1960s, notable for three lead vocalists, heavy use of covers and rich vocal harmonies.

Founded and led by Danny Hutton; classic lineup included three frontmen Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron and four instrumentalists. Released ten studio albums between 1968 and 1976 and had major hits such as "Joy to the World" and "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)". The band relied heavily on outside songwriters and is known for its vocal arrangements and live energy. Member Joe Schermie died in 2002; singers Cory Wells and keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon died in 2015; drummer Floyd Sneed died in 2023. Chuck Negron has toured with his own band; Michael Allsup has been outside the group since 2021. Danny Hutton is identified in the reviews as the founder and a continuing presence in later incarnations of the group.

Reviews emphasize Three Dog Night's three lead vocalists, heavy reliance on covers, and exceptional vocal harmonies. Their commercial peak and most releases date from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s. Reviewers praise live energy and select studio highlights while noting uneven originality. The coverage is affectionate and often ironic.

For:Fans of classic rock, vocal harmony groups, and collectors of 1970s pop/rhythm & blues

They do it well, and with splendid, enthusiastic voices that convey a particular sense of joy: Three Dog Night are anything but seminal, but they are ultra enjoyable.

The album is short, just 38 minutes, but it probably reflects their entire set, given that they were still just the opening act, which usually meant being allotted half the stage time of the main attraction.
