LA RECENSIONE

Spices from every corner of the world.

The Thievery Corporation invite artists of different native and stylistic origins to create a truly flavorful, multicultural album.

The guests are: Anoushka Shankar (daughter of Ravi), Femi Kuti (son of Fela), Jana Andevska, Seu Jorge, Sleepy Wonder, Chuck Brown, Zee, Notch, Verny Varela, and LouLou Ghelichkhani.

A tour through India, Nigeria, Brazil, Jamaica... just to name a few countries.

As for the lyrics, the texts are mostly of a political and social nature: very touching are the contributions on "Vampires", interpreted with Femi Kuti, which discuss various genocides that have occurred in Africa throughout history, most of which are ignored by the world. Other lyrics focus on peace and love.

The musical genre proposed varies from song to song, allowing space for the musical traditions of the guests, while the foundations remain primarily Trip Hop/Dub.

Thus emerges an album of vast richness: the meditative sound of the sitar by Anoushka Shankar in "Mandala"; Sleepy Wonder showcases his very groovy patois throughout the very Dub title track "Radio Retaliation"; Femi Kuti proves to be the rightful heir of his father in the Afrobeat of the sad realities narrated in "Vampires"; the marriage between Samba and spirituality of the peaceful "Hare Krsna" sets the stage for Brazilian Seu Jorge; the dreamy and dazed sound of the Slovakian Jana Andevska's voice in "Beautiful Drug", a chill-out moment to regain strength; the concluding and ethereal "Sweet Tides" where Miss LouLou Ghelichkhani enchants and delights us with her angelic voice, in a perfect "Bristol Sound" piece.

And these are just some titles.

The booklet is also curious, which besides the lyrics contains quotes from various figures: from Einstein to Chomsky to Mos Def.

Oh my love
It's now time for us to say our farewell
Not to deny ourselves
From ourselves
And with the time
The season passes once again
Memories that hang in autumns wind
Memories that hang once again
You are the drug in my veins
And I'm waiting to feel it again
Through the years
Love radiates throughout life's charade
Shines through everything that remains...unsaid
You are the drug in my veins
And I'm waiting to feel it again...
