Everyone always said: 'The Theatre of Tragedy are the best in the gothic -beauty and the beast- field... they're the best... the untouchables...' and so forth. So, since I love the genre, I dashed into the first CD store and searched for one of their albums, unfortunately among the used records there was only "Assembly" (now I understand why it was among the used ones); I bought that one.
...I was literally speechless... a... a thing... I wouldn't even know how to describe it; I can understand why the Norwegian band fell so low with this CD... a concoction of techno-pop-rock....
If that's gothic, then Madonna's 'Like a Virgin' is death metal... I didn't even struggle to learn all the song titles, they were so bad... I can only say that I was 'unlucky', because although ToT produced this atrocity, their previous works in "Aegis" and "Velvet Darkness They Fear" are nothing short of marvelous. In conclusion, I give a 1 only for poor Liv Kristine who is now in Leaves' Eyes.
Strongly not recommended, instead, I recommend the previous albums mentioned a few lines ago.
The vocal duet between Raymond and Liv is interesting, where the sobriety of the former gently embraces the histrionic talent of the latter.
This is a work of quality, ideas, and compositions of rare effectiveness.
