Anyone who is convinced that Switzerland can only offer chocolate and watches will have to come to terms with the contrary. The Swiss band The Young Gods emerged in the rock music scene at the end of the 80s, following the experimental wave of English bands like Renegade Soundwave or Shamen. This immediately creates an intriguing question of whether they are just another hard-rock group or perhaps techno-rock. Neither: guitars worthy of Ritchie Blackmore or bass lines that shake the best sub-woofers are absolutely sampled.. However, the confusion is magnificent; the sounds seem to be those of a real band, a true war machine on which the vocalist Franz Treichler's voice glides like over burning diesel..
In this stunning "Only Heaven" from 1995, echoes of the best of The Doors and Velvet Underground are absorbed and refined to the point of becoming part of a new sound fabric. The Young Gods must have also learned well from groups beyond their territorial borders moving north: Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul, Can, Klaus Schulze.. But their sound impact is much more devastating. Sword slashes of Fender and Gibson sampled, seem at points the ideal backdrop for the surrealist works of their countryman H.R.Giger... The bass strikes and the drum kicks are no less.. Post-modern scenarios loom on the horizon under a lead-colored sky while the singer's voice turns into sandpaper, sometimes evoking King Crimson atmospheres like "Red" or "Starless and Bible Black".. The tracks become a guide to the music that will come in the years to come, flexible rhythms, sonic mantras borrowed from Terry Riley and Philip Glass, clash and chase each other in songs like the splendid "Moon Revolutions" (length 16'34''), or in the adrenaline-pumping "Kissing the Sun", it is no surprise that some years later, U2 appreciated their experiments and collaborated with them.
It's a pity that the group entered a subsequent stagnation phase, not being able to reach the creative peaks of this album, but perhaps it is not a closed chapter, the Gods are still young..
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
06 Kissing the Sun (04:30)
Soon we will be on our way
Say goodbye to yesterday
Soon we will be in the light
Swimming in the open sky
We’ll spread our wings around the stars
Watch the way we drop our scars
We will be kissing the sun
Everybody knows kissing the sun
One and one with the one you’ve chosen
We’ll spread our wings as we get higher
Spread our wings into the fire
We will be kissing the sun
Everybody knows kissing the sun
One and one And the thing explodes
