THE REVIEW

That The Who are one of the most important groups in the history of rock is absolutely indisputable; and it is equally indisputable that they are (relatively, and at least in Italy) less well-known than their peers the Beatles and the Stones, although when Townshend pulled "My Generation" out of the hat, Lennon and company were still writing love songs.

So, this "Ultimate Collection" is very welcome, an excellent introduction (because albums like "Tommy," "Who's Next," and "Live at Leeds" are mandatory to have in full) to their world, from the early explosive singles such as "I Can't Explain" and the aforementioned "My Generation" to the essential "Substitute" and "Magic Bus," all the way to some extracts from "Tommy" such as "Pinball Wizard".

The impressive single "The Seeker" is also present, which seems to announce the power of the songs from "Who's Next," "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again". The second CD contains tracks from the later period of their history, during which they produced albums undoubtedly of lesser stature than the previous ones, but which still feature some fine pieces, like "Who Are You", "Eminence Front" and the pompous "Love Reign O'er Me".

An excellent start in short for anyone who has never heard a Who album, who will surely be stunned by their power and the extremely high-level songwriting of leader Townshend after this listening.
