The Vines by Craig Nichols return in 2004 after the modest success of "Highly Evolved", which brought them to the attention of the masses with singles as powerful as "Get Free" and as sweet as "Homesick".
This album doesn't differ much from the previous one except for the fact that now the Vines have gone from 3 to 4 members, as a second guitarist has been hired.
"Ride", the first single and opening track of "Winning Days", features a very catchy initial riff that gets stuck in your head immediately, thanks also to repeated airplay on MTV, ReteA, and similar... the chorus "Ride with Me
Ride with Me Ride with Me Home..." recalls the chorus structure of Nirvana's "Dive", obviously with some variations. "Tv Pro" is the classic angry Vines track, starting very quietly and then bursting into a distortion as heavy as it is captivating. The lyrics are very short: "See the Late Night Talk Show Guest Professional a Movie Star And Some Kind of Telectual Hes a She Cause Shes Got More Obsessional
Cause Whenever I Get Uptight Know You Will See the Late Night Talk Show Guest I Guess You
The second effort by Craig Nicholls' Aussie Rock Band is full of musical clichés and lacking in ideas.
The anger, power, and explosiveness that had driven the debut album are missing.
Everything sounds dirty, rock, yet terribly melodic!
These guys seem to want to dare more: inserting pure Beatle-like elements in a context ruled by the shadow of Kurt & co.
