An American vocal group formed in Detroit, known for their Motown hits, rich harmonies, and a late-1960s shift toward psychedelic soul.

Formed in Detroit in 1960 and closely associated with Motown Records. Known for major hits such as "My Girl" and the epic "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." In the late 1960s and early 1970s they worked with producer Norman Whitfield and moved into a psychedelic soul/funk direction. The group has undergone many lineup changes; Damon Harris replaced Eddie Kendricks during the era of All Directions (1972). The Funk Brothers provided instrumental backing on many Motown recordings.
