LA RECENSIONE

Sometimes they come back... and in this case, thank goodness!

Andy Tillison, keyboardist and fine songwriter, the "owner" of the band The Tangent, has recovered well from the heart attack that occurred to him in the summer of 2015.

So... he resumed writing, this time in the company of Boff Whalley, a former member of Chumbawamba, and is preparing a new Tangent album.

He gifts us with a nice preview: a mini-suite of about 20 minutes with a rather long title..."A Few Steps Down The Wrong Road"

The track is a very well-achieved and balanced mix of genres that are typically within the band's strings: Canterbury prog with sprinklings of jazz, blues, and classical, always very measured and inserted into an impeccable compositional base. The various moments of the suite are harmoniously connected, much like an excellent cocktail crafted by a great bartender.

The "spoken parts" convince me a bit less, fortunately brief and infrequent, which only make sense for the socially engaged lyrics (not exactly a novelty for the author Tillison).

For the rest, pure enjoyment. Great technical skill, luxurious songwriting. Little singing, a positive side because Tillison doesn't sing badly, but has a somewhat ordinary tone.

20 minutes that flow by like spring water, fresh and regenerating.

Highly recommended

The Tangent returns strongly with a 20-minute mini-suite showcasing a balanced mix of Canterbury prog, jazz, blues, and classical influences. Andy Tillison's songwriting and technical skill shine throughout the piece. While some spoken parts feel less engaging, the overall listening experience is fresh and enjoyable. Vocals are minimal but fitting. Highly recommended for prog fans.
