Three years after the successful debut of "Young For Eternity", The Subways are back...
"All Or Nothing", like its predecessor, lives on two souls: one of aggressive, straightforward rock that blends with another purely britpop: the result of this synergy is, in my opinion, an amazing album and definitely one of the best releases in recent years for those who are passionate about the genre.
Between great "highway rock" rides to listen to with the wind in your hair and a sun that splits the stones ("Girls & Boys", "Kalifornia", "Shake! Shake!") and britpop tunes like "All Or Nothing" or "Move To Newlyn" that, if they were written by Oasis - I'm convinced - they would already be considered legendary, it is truly impossible to be disappointed.
Even the two bonus tracks - "Streetfighter" and "Burst" (I'm reviewing the Japanese edition of the album, they're different in the Australian one) - could be battle singles for any other band with whom the Subways share stages, I hope I'm clear.
So what can I say, there is no lack of energy (and it's explosive in the outbursts "I Won't Let You Down" and "Turnaround"), the choruses are airy and bright, even the big piano and acoustic ballads ("Strawberry Blonde", "Lostboy") which I usually don't handle well have enough verve and rock attitude to be enjoyable...!
The only flaw is the more intrusive production compared to the predecessor, which smooths out a bit of the band's "raw" sound and in the more intense tracks is definitely too much. Other than that, hats off to The Subways!
