Rating: 2008 begins with a surprise with a new music release from SMASHING PUMPKINS.
It's called "AMERICAN GOTHIC," an EP released only six months after "ZEITGEIST," the album marking the return of the Chicago band after their breakup in 2000.
The tracklist includes four songs, all entirely acoustic and free from the arrangements that sometimes weighed down last year's otherwise good album. In these songs, melody reigns, inspired and crystal clear, finally allowed to reach straight to the heart without needing special circumstantial embellishments.
Billy Corgan seems to have regained not only the ability but especially the desire (considering his talent was never in question) to write beautiful songs that can move you even in their simplicity. Probably, the artistic peaks of masterpieces like "SIAMESE DREAM" or "MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS" will never be reached again, but this EP (cover aside) is and will remain for a long time a true little gem.
After a good dozen years, the world is still a vampire, but Billy IS HERE, and he remains one of us.

Billy misuses his voice, embellishes it with different timbre choir bits, and ventures into notes that aren’t his.
Sunkissed is, in my opinion, the most successful episode of the EP.
