"Solve et Coagula" can be many things. To me, having been fortunate enough to see these guys on stage, it was somewhere between a surprise and a confirmation.
Surprise because it’s not every day that a band from Trieste, devoted to a sound seemingly dead and buried in the fumes of the most uncompromising Black/Noise, reaches such levels of notoriety as to sign with a label of the caliber of Southern Lord, while paradoxically remaining completely anonymous in the Italian scene (if it can be called that).
Confirmation because if you’ve been vigilant and attentive to what has been happening in the underground for years now, these guys have truly proven to have an edge over any other artistic/musical entity in the beautiful country, producing albums of musical and ideological consistency that are truly unparalleled.
Produced by none other than Mr. Kurt Ballou in the renowned Godcity Studios, "Solve et Coagula" is a devastating mix of Black Metal, Hardcore, and Grind/Noise, which continues the artistic path of the band already undertaken with the predecessor "Disintoxication," further developing the Black vein of their sound as sealed by the enigmatic (but personally beautiful) title, not to mention the Luciferian goat on the cover.
Moreover, strong in a peculiar but justified anti-nationalist sentiment, which often results in a genuine repulsion towards the culture of our beloved "Italietta," made of ignorance, conformity, and obsolete superstitions, palpable in the rare but interesting interviews given by the band, but especially in episodes like "Antitalian," the group stands out in this album not only for its unprecedented violence but also for its lyrical counterpart, whose lack of tension is practically absent.
In a few words, I am in no risk of overstepping by stating that "Solve et Coagula" is one of the most valid offerings in the Italian extreme panorama since "Beholding The Unpure," as well as a valid opportunity to rekindle that healthy feeling of pride in a culture (ours) that is always far too undervalued.
