The Red Krayola With Art & Language

Musical Group

The Red Krayola (originally Red Crayola) is an American experimental/psychedelic rock group led by Mayo Thompson, formed in the mid-1960s and known for avant-garde music and collaborations with the conceptual art collective Art & Language.

Mayo Thompson is the group's central figure. The band recorded Baby and Child Care (1984) with Art & Language; the DeBaser review notes collaborations with Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden and later associations with new wave and post-rock scenes. The 2015/2016 release of previously recorded material was issued on Drag City (as noted in the review). Collaborators mentioned in reviews include Jim O'Rourke and David Grubbs.

The available review praises Mayo Thompson and The Red Krayola's influence on psychedelic and experimental music, highlights the 1984 album Baby and Child Care (with Art & Language), and situates the band in later movements like new wave and post-rock. The piece mixes music analysis with contextual notes on political/conceptual commitments.

For:Fans of experimental, psychedelic and conceptual rock; readers interested in art-music collaborations.

Probably few musicians have been as influential over the years as Mayo Thompson and the Red Krayola.
