Sometimes to understand the history or the birth of an album, you need to delve into the roots of the artists, their lifestyle, their aspirations, and even their birthplace.
This is the case with Mystery Jets and their debut album. We can easily draw a parallel between the atmosphere of Eel Pie Island, an almost deserted island of Albion (their birthplace), and their sound, suspended between magic and melancholy, between exotic suggestions and intimacy. If we close our eyes while listening, we could catapult ourselves into the reality of Eel Pie, on a sunny day (You Can’t Fool Me Dennis, The Boy Who Ran Away), or by the sea adrift in thoughts (Horse Drawn Cart), with the fear of confronting the chaotic world (testified by the almost furious Zootime, a piece almost progressive in ways, not in length), or finally watching the starry sky (Diamonds in the Dark).
There is not a single track in this Making Dens that lacks that dreamlike aura which makes the album truly excellent, everything brings us closer to the enchanted world of the lamented Syd Barrett. No, he is not dead, he still lives, also thanks to this album.
