THE REVIEW

An hallucinatory journey into some remote corner of the mind. Especially if you've been awake all night staring at the ceiling waiting for Morpheus’ embrace, only to receive it around six in the morning for a scant hour. And, since my only love lately seems to be music, we fish out from the depths of the PC the first effort signed by The Mars Volta.

At the core, there's the story of a suicide attempt, a mix of morphine (the one I could use...) and rat poison that leads the aspiring suicide into a state of deep coma where he has various visions. Kind of like me this morning. Or after some legendary boozy night when it’s already impressive if I haven't started to see dragons around me.

It's difficult for me to highlight one track over another. Perhaps my favorite is "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)": eclecticism in music, a progressive delirium in the truest sense of the word.

From "Son Et Lumiére" to "Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt" the album is a mental trip. Worthy of note, the hallucinatory guitar of Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez, with chords associated almost illegally. Envy, terrible envy.

The stunning voice of Cedric Bixler Zavala, powerful and erotic (yes, I'm not quite right mentally). One of the most loaded and sexy voices in history.

The musical revolution, an undefined mix of genres (including prog, noise, free-jazz), an absolute chaos from which emerges an almost complete perfection.

A dimension suspended between dream and reality. Flashes of various and confused images. The scenario changes continuously, never stopping. It’s a crazy inner turmoil. A vision both tormented and dreamy at times. A tunnel of light and shadows.

"De-Loused In The Comatorium" is from start to finish an expressionist work of art. The expression of the human unconscious and a soul out of its mind with rage and despair.

Ideal in front of the first coffee of the day (the first of a long series).

The Mars Volta, faithful companions of my delusions. With open eyes and without the help of substances, but still delusions.

It’s as if it’s made up of various layers to be peeled time after time.

 Well done but... cloying.

The Mars Volta are without a doubt one of the greatest novelties in the current global Rock scene.

They have given us one of the best albums of 2003, an album that explores different atmospheres without losing cohesion.

The prog-hardcore ambitions blend perfectly with the accessibility of the melodies, aided by Cedric Bixler’s splendid voice.

While remaining a beautiful and very fascinating album, De-Loused perhaps also shows some shortcomings in terms of compactness.

To this day this remains one of the best albums I have ever listened to.

It’s a psychedelic avalanche of hard sounds mixed with Latin rhythms and melodic bursts.

The real gem of the album is the delicate 'Televators', with those beautiful acoustic chords and the almost childlike choirs.

This is one of the best albums of recent times, and if that isn’t enough for you... well, it still means something nonetheless.
