We are talking about the Charles Manson family, yes, that inverted flower children sect that in one fell swoop took out Polanski's wife and the baby she was carrying, so those who, for this reason, are prejudiced against listening to the album should stop reading.
This album was recorded in '69 while Manson was in prison and was pressed on vinyl to scrape together some pennies for Charlie's lawyer. In 1997, this version was released with some unreleased tracks.
The majority of the album is sung by family member Steve Grogan, and the other voices, the female ones, come from the fun-loving Manson girls, and those who know the story know we are talking about some insane chicks, most of the time stoned.
The album is not a masterpiece, partly due to the low quality of the recordings, but there are some interesting gems, particularly the first track that I LOVE both for the lyrics and the music: "Ra hide away". Then comes a noteworthy one "Fires are burning". A few tracks later, the beautiful "Get on home", and right after the explained "Is there no One in your world". As for the rest, some decent tracks, some to throw away, all very rustic country, but in the above-mentioned tracks also very creative.
It feels strange to hum a song sung by some killer/satanists, but music is music!.
