Only for true lovers of brit!!!
But nooo, I don’t want to put "limitations" on this review for those who love other musical genres. But I want to warn you that this album will probably only appeal to true lovers of brit, but you fans of other genres are free to read, get struck by the Kooks, and buy (or download) the album and let it spin in your player for a while. Oh yes! It really seems that the "Motherland" Britain has thrown another group at us which, thank God, hasn’t exploded (for now) as the Next big thing... or hasn’t exploded as a commercial phenomenon thanks to "daddy internet" (any reference to Arctic Monkeys is purely coincidental). In short, this group hasn't exploded at all, so I expect that few of you will know them. Nothing new on the western front then... the motherland gives us another "highly" BRIT group that reshuffles the lessons imparted from the '90s up to now by other BRIT groups.
The beauty of the Kooks is, however, knowing how to reshuffle these lessons so well, how to organize them well, bringing out a debut album so colorful and varied that it won't be a masterpiece but will be (at least) forty minutes in fourteen tracks of highly enjoyable music. To satisfy your curiosity, brit lovers and not, it has become an obligation for me. I cannot avoid explaining some of these 14 sprightly songs. It starts as the first track "Seaside" and here we have the acoustic Coldplay of Parachutes, just one acoustic guitar accompanying the voice. (I advise readers to note the names of the groups I will mention so that you get an idea) The rock explosion is around the corner and the Kooks can also offer us the fresh tunes of the "YOUNG" Supergrass, those of I Should Coco, with "See the World" and "Sofa Song". But in the Kooks' songs, there are not only the dated groups but also the newborns: Coral ("If Only") and Kaiser Chiefs ("Eddie's Gun," "I Want You Back"). A revival, a nice revival. Ahhhhhhh, but I don’t want to forget the Blur who... well... are a bit everywhere in this album. But beware!!! The Kooks have also gone a little further back in time by reviewing some songs from the Police and letting themselves be "slightly" inspired, they wrote "Match Box" and "Time Awaits" taking up the reggae themes of Reggatta de blanc (Police album from 1979, ed).
Well, and now what will you do? Will you get the album, you who did not know the Kooks, or will you remain bored by all this copying and pasting of these years declaring that this is just another copy album of many? Well, everything I had to say I’ve said, I gave my rating based on the feeling they gave me, which would be: a varied and fun copy-cat. The Kooks are not to be discarded, maybe in the next album, they will mature (let's remember that Radiohead weren’t exactly the portrait of originality in their early days but then...) and will reserve a nice surprise for us. Mhhh... Yes, keep an eye on them but not too much because, in my opinion, they will surprise us in a few years.
