A year after the release of "Love Is A Charm Of Powerful Trouble," The Immortal Lee County Killers II have released a new album.
Divided into two parts, studio and live, as if it were vinyl, "Love Unbolts The Dark" is an album that delivers a punk rock shock. The creators, The Token One (vocals and drums) and Chetley Weise (vocals and guitar), are two crazy gentlemen from Alabama, with two not-so-reputable faces, and in their songs they exude power, energy, and anger.
The roots of their music are ancient, starting with the blues. But once unearthed, they are transfigured, revitalized, and desecrated, crashing into a sort of dark nihilism. And in doing so, they manage to be captivating. They demand and obtain volume from their listeners, transporting them to a semiconscious feverish state, demanding power, hitting the gut, tearing the soul. They exhibit a breathtaking, adrenaline-fueled, rough, dirty, lo-fi sound, using only a guitar, frequently distorted, nervous, and sharp as a razor, and a powerful, persistent, and alienating drum.
They are not afraid to confront the bluesmen of the past, like John Lee Hooker, of whom they cover two songs ("Burnin' Hell," "Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive") and Skip James, whose "Devil Got My Woman" they interpret in a beautiful acoustic version that closes the album.
Moreover, in the live part, they are literally devastating. They may not become part of the pantheon of my favorite musicians, but they have pleasantly battered me for a week, reminding me that if we never manage to distance ourselves from our conventions, if we were afraid to change, not always, but at least every now and then, if we always listened to the same music, life would be a major pain.
Four stars rounded up.
