"Hello Paul?"
"Hey Julie, what a pleasure"
"Listen..okay, the business of writing about the Replacements and how they were pivotal for us Blake Babies. But..screw it..it seems like they put us on a pedestal to be revered as "demigods of the glorious '90s alternative American rock band. How about dusting off your guitars and playing some tracks together?"
"Damn Julie, I'm as excited as a kid on their first date with the girlfriend. Look, you're pulling me out of some kind of numbness. People only know me for this damn Replacements. Too much emphasis on our comeback but then I threw it all to the wind, I couldn't take it anymore. I agree with you, screw it, we're not museum pieces"
"So let's start Paul, what the hell are we waiting for? Look, I have this piece I've practiced, it would be perfect for a duet "Born for me" or this sort of funny nursery rhyme I got from my nephew..I called it "1/2 2P" you know, it reminds me of Christmas when you feel like a kid again with gifts and everything else."
"Ahahahaha, Julie..but yes, it's kind of like being kids again. I'd see it more as a direct record, as it comes to us. Ballads..well "Back" would be perfect look, but I always want pounding drums, none of this folky stuff. In fact, I'll tell you more, I'd add "Love Out Loud" very Stooges..what the hell"
"You're right Paul, a band that really pounds. I'm getting back to the bass in a big way. But give me a ballad with hearts, I'm getting old, I know, but I have to do "Kissing Break" come on. A bit Beatlesque if you want, but sincere. But I don't want to come off as pathetic ehh! Look, to keep the rock'n'roll habit I'd also throw in "Dance to the Fight"
" You have free rein Julie, you know it. I can already imagine us making funny faces while we play "Whole Lotta Nothin'" and getting into it with those big guitars and that insane urge for power pop we never abandoned. But also pure Ramones sound with "Done Done Done". Come on, we'll have fun like kids. I'll bring out my checkered shirt and my rotting All Stars."
"Then hurry up Paul and get your butt over here. I'll warm up the amps and put on some muffins. You bring some beers, it's going to be a long night"
"I'm on my way, baby"
