In Eastern Europe, trends seem to arrive a few years later compared to the West, which, in some ways, is a good thing considering the hundreds of copycat bands flooding the various scenes. Nevertheless, there appears to be a buzz and a great hunger to come out from those parts, perhaps working in DIY environments but with the right dose of positivity and professionalism.

The Belarusians Hysteria are undoubtedly a clear example of what has just been mentioned. After a well-received debut in their native territories, they come forward with “Trojan Horse”, a tasty EP that aims to prepare the listener for the debut album, expected this winter.

Technically virtuous, Hysteria is the classic band loving odd times and everything that leads to the terms prog and math, styles that they seem to have studied well over the years. Adding to the mix are jazz-oriented compositions and something very close (close, mind you) to black metal, especially in the vocal parts.

Musically, it's an excellent work, varied and efficient if thought of in a live setting, where the group has already had the opportunity to measure up to names like Veil Of Maya, Rise Of The North Star, and Iwrestledabearonce, among others. The only flaw of this EP might be the limited vocal flexibility of the singer, monotonous but not out of place. A greater variety of solutions would help the cause quite a bit, in my opinion.

Recording and production are handled by the band itself, aspects on which much time has been spent, leading to a more than satisfactory final result. While waiting to see them perform in our parts (a European tour is currently being defined and should soon reach Italy) and for the new album, the advice is to give them a chance; fundamentally, they might even deserve it!
