Feeling the pre-release anxiety of the new Hidden Cameras album, which is expected in stores in a few days, I re-listen to the first one. I immediately realize that it is an excellent work and that an equally effective encore would be a huge goal for them. “The Smell Of Our Own” is from as recently as 2003 and was released by Rough Trade, a brand that's a guarantee.
The group, hailing from an increasingly prominent Toronto in the Indie Pop scene, relies on a very large collective and aligns with the ranks of Orchestral or Chamber Pop. So far so good, except that they profess to be the pioneers of a genre as innovative as it is "strange". In fact, under the "mood" category, they answer with an ambiguous “Gay Pastoral Folk”. No, there are no double meanings; it's just as you read it. Advocates of pastoral folk pop, they are also promoters of gay aesthetics. Already legends are building around Joel Gibb's group (the jack-of-all-trades bandleader). It's said that at their concerts, naked dancers cut across the stage performing graceful leaps and gentle choreographies. It's a kind of spiritual symposium show. It might sound like a joke, but apparently, it's reality. (With the proper precautions due to rumors that travel across the ocean through word of mouth.)

Ok, maybe professing to be gay in the music scene is something that's already been seen, has paid off, and perhaps has worn out; sincerity is better. But for goodness’ sake, let's get Glam Rock out of our heads; we're talking about pastoral folk, acoustic and melodic; the references are therefore different. I'm the first to be surprised, but track after track, the names are those of Belle & Sebastian, the early ones in "Animals Of Prey" and the latter-day ones in "Ban Marriage". "A Miracle" seems like a slow piece written by Shines and Girls In Hawaii. There are also clear references to Nick Drake (in "The Man That I Am With My Man") and to the Beach Boys in the harmonic choruses and the rhythmic, pressing hand claps of "Breath On It".
Note the kitsch cover, framed by four naked backs and related bottoms (back). Therefore, talented and even funny.
A true gem in anticipation of the now upcoming confirmation.

03   A Miracle (02:56)

Sent from god
A holy visit
I wake up in the night
"What is it"
I'm startled and I'm cold
and I believe that I have problems in my dreams
I feel like I'm the only one
and that I carry your disease

In my head you are suffering
In my head you are

He brings me flowers that are gold
and honey from the bees
He places a blossom in my hair
and undresses me
He tells me that I'm the only one
that can carry his disease
I'm made to be an animal by his love
and to bear his baby

In my head you are suffering
In my head you are
In my head you are suffering
In my head you are
