Perhaps too available as session musicians, the Heliocentrics have so far proposed musical releases that to my ears have managed to destabilize the center of balance of this new way of making experimental jazz. In this 2013 EP, the formula applied is the same as the previous LPs, which can only be a good thing.

Quatermass Sessions 1 presents itself as a collection of unfinished works, brief musical sketches, balanced between consistency and inconsistency, elusive and mysterious in continually leaving the true evolution of the tracks. Little pieces of a vague and shapeless puzzle create a constant flow that runs fast as duration, but slow in assimilation (if it happens). As usual, the creators of the situation offer a considerable stylistic enigma, where psychedelia takes the lead and manipulates a puppet made of vintage jazz, avant-garde, ethnic melodies, floating abstract hip-hop, and muffled funk.

Their music is the classic sheet stretched on which you bounce throughout an Heliocentrics album: defragmented compositions at the core, funk with exotic strands, and extremely multifaceted sounds hold the listener's hand in this jungle of distortions and amplified sinusoidal perceptions. It is clearly an altered reality that their tracks portray: a mosaic in which colors pulse and sounds breathe. The most diverse elements can interact, giving rise to an album that is a continuous fractal, but these jams can only compete with the interludes of their most authoritative work.

About a quarter of an hour, discretized in nine visionary and cosmic sketches, which unfortunately can only leave one wanting more. I see it as an excellent mini-taste for those who know nothing of them and feel some interest before venturing into the pure musical deliriums they have been capable of releasing.

In the meantime, here is their masterpiece.
